What Is chiropractic Treatment?

Welcome to the exciting world of chiropractic. You are joining many of your neighbors who have discovered the benefits of chiropractic care. You may be wondering what is chiropractic or you may have asked yourself: "Why should I see a chiropractor? Chiropractic care has much to offer you, even if you aren't currently in pain. Chiropractic is the fastest growing method of healthcare. There are many reasons to consider visiting a chiropractor, the following reasons are only two of them.

Chiropractic Care Treats the Cause of the Problem

Chiropractic care is primarily concerned with the complete health of the human body, not just the relief of symptoms. Over-the-counter (OTC) medicine may temporarily relieve pain, but the pain is only the symptom of the underlying, real problem. If you don't take the time or the proper approach to deal with the cause of the pain, it has great likelihood of returning again and again.

Headaches, neck aches and back pain are three of the most common symptoms associated with chiropractic care. But chiropractics can also effectively treat pain in the shoulders, legs and extremities. Many of these areas of pain are caused by misalignments in the spine.

A chiropractor has the extensive medical training to identify the source of your problem and provide the correct form of therapy for it, allowing your body to heal itself. The result is a long-term health solution as opposed to the temporary relief of pain you might receive with OTC pain relievers that may mask symptoms.

No Drugs or Needles

Common treatments of back pain and headaches generally involve the use of pain relief medication, either in pill or injected form. Not only do these methods usually fail to solve the underlying problem, they can be unpleasant and expensive to use.

Many times, aches and pains (especially chronic pain) are caused by a misaligned vertebrae exerting pressure on a nerve in your back or neck. A chiropractor will identify and isolate the place where your spine is misaligned and gently work it back into place. The pressure on your nerve will be relieved and any pains, tight muscles or headaches will go away because the source has been neutralized.

What do Chiropractors do?

Chiropractors remove serious interference in your body which prevents you from functioning at your best. Free of pinched nerves and vertebral subluxations, you are more balanced with less stress on your nervous system and body structure.

How does chiropractic care affect the entire body?

Science knows that the nervous system controls and coordinates all the functions of your body. Your body sends information over the nerves to the brain. Your brain interprets the information from your senses and sends messages back through the nerves to the body. When these messages are disrupted, the body becomes weak, loses optimum function, and is vulnerable to disease. Chiropractic care focuses on the spine and targets the nervous system. The spine is the point of access to the nervous system because the spinal cord runs down the spine and the nerves exit through it.

Head

Headaches are mostly associated with problems stemming from the neck area. They are frequently caused by muscular tension in the neck that has been caused by stress and anxiety. One cause for more severe headaches, such as migraines, is constricted blood vessels to the head. The blood vessels being constricted may also cause accompanying symptoms such as blurry vision, nausea, vomiting, tunnel vision, and others. Where people suffer from migraines, common headaches, stiffness and pain, chiropractic treatment has been shown to relieve headaches with adjustments to the neck. Your chiropractor is also trained to offer dietary advice that may alleviate some of these symptoms.

Shoulders

Shoulder pain can be caused by bursitis, dislocation, and a condition known as 'frozen shoulder' or adhesive capsulitis. Although there is no known cause for 'frozen shoulder', it responds well to chiropractic adjustment. Bursitis and dislocated shoulders also respond well.

Upper Back

Upper back pain can be caused by a variety of conditions. Some of these conditions can be directly related to neurological (nerve) irritation of the inter-costal nerve running through the muscles traveling through the ribs. Other pain causing conditions are referred pain from internal organs such as the lungs, gall bladder, and stomach. Your chiropractor can treat these pain-causing conditions by gentle manipulation of the thoracic area between the shoulder blades. This treatment can also help other related conditions such as bronchitis and asthma.

Elbows

The most common cause of elbow pain is a condition known as epicondylitis, more commonly known as 'tennis elbow' or 'golfer's elbow'. It is inflammation of the elbow where the tendons are attached to the bone. Chiropractors can identify and treat theses painful conditions through gentle adjustments.

Wrists and Hands

Wrists, hands, and fingers can be afflicted with conditions such as arthritis or the simple 'locking' of joints. The fact that the hand has so many bones and joints increases the places where these conditions can exist. Through gentle manipulation, your Chiropractor can loosen up your bones and joints and help relieve discomfort.

Lower Back

The lower back is the hub of the human body. It supports our upper body, and sends messages to our lower body. Many problems can develop in the lower back area and some of them can be very painful and debilitating. Among these pain causing conditions are prolapsed and degenerated discs. Picture your spine, instead of a solid column rising up through your back, picture a stack of pads, similar to a spring that allows flexibility so your back can bend. Rising up through the middle of the 'spring' is a single cord known as the spinal cord. From the spinal cord coming out from between the ‘pads of the spring', run smaller cords known as nerves. Normally, the pads have enough 'padding', on the surface where the nerves meet to prevent pressure or pinching of the nerves when we bend our backs. Sometimes, due to a jarring injury, a degenerative condition, or simply because of your lifestyle the padding of the disc becomes compromised or shifted making a harder nerve-contact, pinching the nerve. This causes pain. In some cases the patient will not be able to stand up straight at all. Sciatica is a good example of a problem resulting from a prolapsed disc trapping a nerve.

Hips

Hip pain can be attributed to a trapped or pinched nerve in the lumbar spine projecting pain to the hips and pelvic area, or another condition known as osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative form of arthritis that may eventually have to be treated through surgery. There can be a long wait before a patient can find a surgeon that could perform the surgery. In the meantime, your chiropractor can make the wait more bearable through soft tissue massage of the ligaments and muscles around the joints.

Knees

Knee pain can be attributed to torn or worn cartilage from sports injuries or another condition known as osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative form of arthritis that may eventually have to be treated through surgery. In the case of torn or worn cartilage, they can easily be treated by your chiropractor through an adjustment to the affected area. Although in more advanced cases, surgery may be required to permanently correct the problem. In the case of osteoarthritis, there can be a long wait before a patient can find a surgeon to perform the surgery. In the meantime, your chiropractor can help through soft tissue massage of the ligaments and muscles around the joints.

Feet

Feet and toes can be afflicted with conditions such as arthritis and 'hammer toe' or even just the simple 'locking' of joints. The fact that the foot has so many bones and joints increases the places where these conditions can exist. Through gentle manipulation, your chiropractor can loosen up your bones and joints and help relieve discomfort.
